Holter and Event Monitor

Port Macquarie Cardiology

A Holter Monitor is a continuous ECG (Electrocardiogram) recording taken over a period of 24 hours or more.

The ECG tracings acquired during the recording are analysed by a Cardiologist and a report is forwarded to the patient’s referring Doctor.

During the monitoring, adhesive electrodes are placed on the patient’s chest and connected to a portable monitor. Before monitoring begins, a Cardiac Technician informs the patient how to record any symptoms experienced whilst wearing the monitor.

An Event Monitor allows patients to trigger an ECG recording when they experience their symptoms, and the recording is then transmitted by phone to be reported. Our experienced cardiac technicians arrange a detailed personal education session on how this process works for all patients requiring this investigation.

What to bring/what to wear

  • Please bath/shower prior to your monitor fitting, as you will NOT be able to shower/swim for the duration of the monitoring.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit, preferably loose fitting, as this enables the monitor to be worn in a discreet manner.
  • Men may require small areas on the chest to be shaved to ensure adequate electrode contact.
  • Do not use talc, body lotion or wear neck chains.

Consent Form

You will need to have signed a Port Macquarie Cardiology Exercise Stress Test Consent Form.

Important

Patients should ask their referring Doctor if current medication should be temporarily stopped before the test as it can interfere with the test.

Other information

  • Your initial appointment to have the monitor applied takes approximately 15 minutes
  • When you return at the completion of the monitoring period, you should allow 10 minutes for the Technician to remove the monitor and electrodes
  • Medicare Rebate available
