Dr Andrew Mamo

BSc, MBBS, FRACP

Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Specialist

Dr Andrew Mamo is a General Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Specialist with an interest in preventative cardiology, screening for coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies. He is skilled in the assessment of all acquired cardiac conditions with ultrasound, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.

Dr Mamo graduated the Bachelor of Medicine;Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at The University of Sydney in 2014 before undertaking internship at The Tweed Hospital. He completed his Physician Training at St Vincent’s Hospital and Cardiology Advanced Training at Prince of Wales Hospital. He has worked in several cardiac centres in rural and outer-metropolitan locations including the Wagga Wagga, The Sutherland Shire and Port Macquarie as a trainee and Alice Springs, Darwin, Dubbo and Orange as a consultant. He has also volunteered in cardiac outreach services to Timor Leste and The Solomon Islands.

The signature of Dr Mamo’s care is a thorough assessment and a dedication to placing each patient’s cardiac health in the context of who they are as a person before developing an agreed strategy to help people live the life they want for themselves.

When he’s not seeing patients, furthering his training or locuming throughout Australia, Andrew can be found playing music, enjoying weekend drives in vintage and classic cars or playing Futsal (indoor soccer).

Dr Liam Back

Interventional Cardiologist

Dr Liam Back is an Interventional Cardiologist based in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Dr Back completed his medical school training at the University of Newcastle / New England in 2012, obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine with Distinction. Dr Back completed his junior doctor and core cardiology training at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. He achieved his Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2020. Following this, Dr Back travelled to the United Kingdom and completed two fellowships in interventional cardiology; the first at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, Wales, and the second at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, England. Both fellowships had a subspecialty focus on complex percutaneous intervention and chronic total occlusion percutaneous intervention.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Back has a strong interest in clinical research. He has been published in multiple highly regarded international medical journals including Circulation. He has worked as a sub-primary investigator for several large randomised controlled trials including the SELUTION De Novo study, and the IOCYTE AMI-3 trial. In 2024, Dr Back achieved a Master in Clinical Trials Research from the University College London. He continues to be involved in clinical research with a subspecialty interest in coronary atherosclerosis and bioresorbable stent technology.

Dr Imants Rubenis

Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Imants Rubenis is a General Cardiologist who is undertaking advanced fellowship in interventional cardiology. He has a strong interest in modern techniques for the treatment of heart disease, and in providing healthcare to patients in regional areas.

Dr Rubenis is very familiar with Port Macquarie and the Mid-North Coast region. He attended the University of New South Wales Port Macquarie Rural Clinical School, graduating with distinction in 2015. He then completed internship and residency at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

Following this, he undertook Physician Training and Cardiology Advanced Training at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney. During his training, he completed a Master of Medicine degree from the University of Sydney and received awards in both research (CSANZ NSW AT Research Award 2022), and teaching (RMO Tutor of the Year, UNSW RCS 2017). He has had more than 40 research works presented at conferences or published in peer-reviewed journals, with a particular interest in healthcare outcomes for patients in regional and remote Australia.

Dr Rubenis has current appointments at Concord Hospital and The Mater Hospital and is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney.
